Why this matters

Norway's Working Environment Act (Arbeidsmiljøloven) gives you strong legal protections: 25 days annual leave, mandatory written contracts, and protection against unfair dismissal. Joining a trade union (fagforening) is common and the fee is fully tax-deductible.

Cultural Tips

1

Feriepenger is paid in June as a lump sum — you will not receive normal salary during your vacation weeks.

In June, your employer pays out 10.2% of your previous year's gross salary as holiday pay. During the weeks you actually take vacation, you receive no regular pay — the feriepenger received in June is meant to cover those weeks. Budget accordingly.

2

About 70% of Norwegian workers belong to a union, and even non-members benefit from tariffavtaler.

Collective agreements (tariffavtaler) set minimum wages and conditions for entire sectors. Even if you do not join, you likely benefit. However, joining gives you access to free legal representation, salary negotiation support, and insurance — often worth far more than the 1–2% of salary fee.

3

You cannot be dismissed without saklig grunn (valid cause) once your probationary period ends.

Norwegian law makes it very difficult to fire employees without documented, legitimate reasons. Probationary periods (prøvetid) are typically 6 months. After that, dismissal requires written notice, a formal meeting (drøftelsesmøte), and a valid reason. Contact your union or Arbeidstilsynet immediately if you think a dismissal is unfair.

4

Overtime must be compensated at a minimum 40% premium by law — 100% on Sundays.

Arbeidsmiljøloven sets these minimums. Your tariffavtale may set higher rates. If your employer asks you to work extra hours without this premium, that is a legal violation. Report it to Arbeidstilsynet at arbeidstilsynet.no or call 73 19 97 00.

Practical Steps

1

Get your arbeidsavtale on day one

Norwegian law requires a written employment contract before you start work. It must state your salary, working hours, job title, start date, probationary period, and notice terms. If your employer does not provide one, request it in writing immediately.

2

Identify the correct union for your sector

LO is the largest umbrella organisation. YS covers a range of sectors. Unio is for public-sector professionals (nurses, teachers). Akademikerne is for university-educated professionals. Find your match at lo.no, ys.no, unio.no, or akademikerne.no.

3

Check your tariffavtale for sector minimums

Ask HR or your union which tariffavtale covers your workplace. It sets minimum wages, overtime rates, and conditions beyond the legal floor. Many immigrants discover they have been underpaid once they read the applicable tariffavtale.

4

Track your ferie entitlement and feriepenger

You are entitled to 25 working days (5 weeks) of annual leave per year. Feriepenger of 10.2% of last year's gross salary is paid in June. Workers over 60 get an extra week. Check your payslip (lønnsslipp) each month to confirm correct deductions.

5

Know your rights around dismissal and notice

During prøvetid (up to 6 months), the employer can dismiss you with 14 days' notice. After that, notice is typically 1 month (under 5 years), 2 months (5–10 years), or 3 months (10+ years). Any dismissal must include a drøftelsesmøte (discussion meeting) before the decision.

6

Report violations to Arbeidstilsynet

If your employer violates AML — unpaid overtime, unsafe conditions, illegal dismissal — contact Arbeidstilsynet at arbeidstilsynet.no or call 73 19 97 00. Complaints can be filed anonymously. Your fagforening also provides free legal support.
