Norwegian Sick Leave

Sykemelding og sykepenger

Official & AdminIntermediate18 min

Why this matters

Norway provides 100% salary coverage for up to one year of sick leave. Understanding the difference between egenmelding (self-reported) and sykmelding (doctor-issued), plus your rights under the Working Environment Act, is essential for any employee.

Cultural Tips

1

Egenmelding is a right, not a favour.

Norwegian employees have a legal right to use egenmelding for the first three days without a doctor's note. Many immigrants feel uncomfortable using it, but Norwegian employers expect it and it does not reflect badly on you.

2

You cannot be dismissed while on sick leave.

Section 15-8 of the Working Environment Act (arbeidsmiljøloven) protects you from dismissal for the first 12 months of continuous sick leave. If your employer tries to terminate you during this period, the dismissal is generally invalid.

3

Gradert sykmelding is preferred by NAV and employers.

A partial sick leave (for example 50%) keeps you connected to the workplace and is actively encouraged. It reduces the chance of long-term absence and usually leads to a faster return to full work capacity.

4

The dialogmøte at 8 weeks is mandatory.

Your employer must arrange a follow-up meeting (dialogmøte) by the eighth week of sick leave. Attendance is expected from you, your employer, and often your fastlege or a NAV case worker. Missing it without a valid reason can affect your sykepenger.

Practical Steps

1

Notify your employer on day one

As soon as you know you cannot work, contact your line manager — a short message or phone call is sufficient. Norwegian workplace culture expects prompt communication. You do not need to explain your diagnosis, only that you are ill and will be absent. For the first three calendar days you can self-certify using egenmelding, typically registered through your employer's HR system (for example Visma or SAP).

2

Book your fastlege if symptoms continue past day three

From day four onwards you need a formal sykmelding from a licensed doctor. Call the legekontor as early as possible on day four — mornings fill quickly. Find your fastlege at helsenorge.no or call 810 59 500. In urgent cases, the legevakt (116117) can also issue a sykmelding.

3

Confirm your sykmelding digitally on helsenorge.no

Your doctor sends the sykmelding electronically. Log in to helsenorge.no using BankID or MinID, navigate to "Sykmeldinger", and confirm the details. This ensures NAV and your employer receive the right information without paperwork delays.

4

Understand who pays and when

Your employer covers 100% of your salary for the first 16 calendar days (arbeidsgiverperioden). From day 17 onwards NAV pays sykepenger directly, capped at 6G (approximately 711,720 kr in 2024). Self-employed workers receive 80% from day 17.

5

Attend the obligatory follow-up meetings

At four weeks your employer must send a written follow-up plan (oppfølgingsplan). At eight weeks the dialogmøte must take place — a structured meeting between you, your employer, and often your fastlege or a NAV adviser. You have a right to bring a union representative (tillitsvalgt).

6

Know the limits and what comes next

Sykepenger can be paid for a maximum of 52 weeks within a rolling 3-year window. If you remain unable to work after that, NAV will assess you for arbeidsavklaringspenger (AAP) or uføretrygd (disability benefit). Start the dialogue with NAV well before the 52-week limit — they typically contact you around 39 weeks.
