Why this matters

Every resident in Norway is entitled to a fastlege (regular GP). Knowing how to book, explain symptoms, and handle a prescription saves you from uncomfortable silences and misdiagnoses.

Cultural Tips

1

Register for a fastlege on day one

Go to helsenorge.no immediately after getting your personnummer. You are assigned to a GP list. Popular doctors have waiting lists — you may be placed on a random list initially and can request a change later.

2

Doctors are direct and brief

Norwegian GPs typically see you for 15 minutes and are efficient. State your main symptom first, not background context. They will ask follow-up questions. Do not be surprised if they do not shake hands or make small talk.

3

Egenmelding before a sykmelding

For the first 3 days of illness, Norwegian employees use egenmelding (self-certification) — you do not need a doctor's note. You only need a sykmelding from the doctor from day 4 onwards, or if you lack egenmelding rights in your first months.

4

Frikort saves money

After paying around 3,235 kr in co-payments in a calendar year (the 2024 threshold), you qualify for a frikort giving free healthcare for the rest of the year. Keep all your kvitteringer (receipts) — the system often tracks this automatically.

Practical Steps

1

Register for a fastlege

Log in to helsenorge.no with BankID. Go to "Fastlege" and choose a doctor near your address. If your preferred GP has a full list, join the waiting list and accept the auto-assigned one in the meantime.

2

Book your appointment

Most legekontor have online booking via helsenorge.no or their own website. You can also call — the number is on the surgery's profile page. Online booking is usually faster.

3

Prepare your symptom summary

Write down: main symptom, how long it has lasted, severity (1–10), any related symptoms, medications you take, and allergies. Norwegians appreciate brevity and clarity.

4

Know your egenandel

Expect to pay around 180–240 kr per GP visit (2024 rates). Bring a card — most surgeries do not take cash. You will receive a kvittering that counts towards your frikort.

5

Collect prescriptions from apotek

Prescriptions are sent electronically to your e-resept record. Show your ID at any apotek — the pharmacy can see your prescriptions digitally. No paper needed.

6

Use egenmelding for short illness

If you are sick for 1–3 days, notify your employer via HR system (e.g., Visma) using egenmelding. You do not need a doctor's note. Check your employment contract for eligibility period.
