Key Terms Glossary

Fastlege

Your assigned regular GP in Norway.

Everyone registered in Norway has a fastlege. Check yours at helsenorge.no. You can change twice per year for free.

Frikort

Exemption card — when you have paid 3,155 kr in patient fees in a calendar year, the rest is free.

Track your spending via helsenorge.no. Once you reach the threshold, apply for a frikort and all further appointments that year are free.

Hastegrad

Priority level of a referral: Øyeblikkelig (emergency), Prioritert (priority), Elektiv (routine/elective).

Ask your GP what hastegrad was assigned. If your condition worsens, contact your fastlege — they can upgrade the hastegrad.

Pasientrettigheter

Patient rights — you have the right to a second opinion, to choose hospital, and to a response within 10 days.

Hospitals must respond to referrals within 10 working days and give you an appointment date.

Helsenorge.no

The national patient portal where you see referrals, prescriptions, journal entries, and vaccination records.

Log in with BankID. You can see this referral, track the response, and book/change appointments online.

What To Do Now

  1. 1Log in to helsenorge.no with BankID and check "Henvisninger" (referrals) to see the status.
  2. 2The hospital must respond within 10 working days — if they do not, contact them directly.
  3. 3Ask the hospital if the MRI will be at the same appointment or separate.
  4. 4If symptoms worsen before your appointment, call your fastlege — they can escalate the hastegrad.
  5. 5When the appointment date arrives, bring your health card (helsekortet) and any X-rays or previous imaging.
  6. 6Track your patient fees (egenandel) on helsenorge.no — once you hit 3,155 kr you qualify for a frikort.
