Key Terms Glossary

Dugnad

Communal volunteer work — a cornerstone of Norwegian social culture.

Refusing dugnad repeatedly without reason damages your reputation in the community. It is expected at schools, housing associations (borettslag), and sports clubs.

Foresatte

Those with parental responsibility — parents or legal guardians.

All school communications go to foresatte, not just biological parents.

Visma Flyt Skole

The main parent-school communication platform in Norway.

Download the app (search "Visma Flyt Skole") and log in with your MinID or BankID to see your child's messages, grades, and absences.

Klassekontakt

Parent representative for your child's class.

Elected each year. They organise social events and relay concerns to the school. Consider volunteering — it builds connections.

SFO (Skolefritidsordning)

After-school care program for ages 6–10.

Usually runs 07:30–17:00. You apply each spring for the following school year.

What To Do Now

  1. 1Download Visma Flyt Skole from the App Store or Google Play and log in with MinID.
  2. 2RSVP via the app — say whether you are coming or give a reason if you cannot.
  3. 3Mark the date: Saturday 26 April, 10:00–14:00.
  4. 4Prepare old clothes and gardening gloves.
  5. 5If you have young children, bring them — it is a family-friendly event.
  6. 6Use the dugnad as a chance to meet other parents in the school community.
