Key Terms Glossary
Probation period — max 6 months, with 14 days' notice on both sides.
During prøvetid you have less job security. After it ends, you are much harder to dismiss.
Notice period — typically 1–3 months after probation, depending on seniority.
Notice runs from the 1st of the following month, not from the day you give notice.
The Working Environment Act — Norway's main labour law.
If your contract offers less than what AML requires, AML wins. The law sets minimum standards, not maximums.
Permanent employment — the most protected form of employment in Norway.
To dismiss a permanent employee, the employer must prove "saklig grunn" (valid reason) in writing.
Valid reason for dismissal — a high legal bar that protects employees.
If you are dismissed without saklig grunn, you can sue and are entitled to reinstatement or compensation.
Overtime premium — minimum 40% above normal pay by law.
Some collective agreements (tariffavtaler) set higher overtime rates. Check if your industry has one.
What To Do Now
- 1Read §§ 2 and 3 carefully — prøvetid and oppsigelsestid are the most important clauses for your day-to-day rights.
- 2Note your prøvetid end date and put it in your calendar — your rights change significantly after this date.
- 3Ask HR which collective agreement (tariffavtale) applies to your role, if any.
- 4Register as an employee with Skatteetaten.no to ensure correct tax withholding from day one.
- 5Download the Altinn app — you will use it for tax returns, employer reports, and official correspondence.
- 6Contact Arbeidstilsynet (arbeidstilsynet.no) if you believe your employer is violating labour law — inspections are free and confidential.
